INAPPROPRI8

ectoplastiic asked: Just touching on that earlier post, I think it's important to keep in mind that when natives make things like dreamcatcher earrings/necklaces ect. it's usually with appealing to the white consumer in mind.

Of course it’s important to keep in mind. It’s a pretty controversial subject. Sadly, catering to tourists is how a lot of tribes make a large percentage of their income. Is it wrong to find ways to profit from the people who oppress you? Unfortunate, yes. But wrong? Definitely open to discussion on this one.

digatisdi asked: I'd also like to add something to the thing about "if you must buy Native crafts": What I always tell people is to either buy from the person directly (as opposed to a wholesaler) and ask questions as to the object's intended use or if you must use a wholesaler, please find someone from the culture (natives are everywhere) and ask them about the purpose. Also, if a native gives you something hand made and tells you what is an appropriate use of it, use it for that purpose alone. Nothing else.

I agree. ^^

madcorelove asked: i remember you making a post on how using dream catchers as "decoration" and "jewellery" was cultural appropriation, then you go to say its fine if it is made by Native hands & worn? I cant even ... dream catchers aren't jewellery or decoration they are sacred. Even if made by Native hands, a dream catcher bellybutton ring actually takes away from its meaning. If it were to be worn by something ethnically different than Native, i'm sure your viewpoint would be different on the subject. Good day.

I don’t believe I ever said that it was “fine.” I imagine I said something along the lines of how I don’t like the fact that we’ve been forced to sell off our traditions to support ourselves, but if you must buy Native crafts, I would MUCH prefer that you support us and don’t go to Urban Outfitters.

crucifixrabbit asked: So, just a question, not trying to be rude, but do you consider the Atlanta Braves and Florida Seminoles to be racist? Or every single high school with a "Native" mascot?

Yes. I do.

Uhh no, not amazing. Kinda racist, in fact. re-tagged. #racist.

Not #red indian. Fun fact, “red indian” is a racial slur, so stop using it.
